Equipping Faculty and Staff to Work with LGBTQIA+ Students Abroad

Presentation Description: Oftentimes program leaders bring with them expertise in their fields and enthusiasm for working with students in international settings but lack the opportunity to practice the skills necessary to work with LGBTQIA+ students before facing the unique situations that may arise when working with these populations. This session is designed to equip education abroad professionals with the resources and tools to implement trainings with faculty and staff leaders by offering a low-risk opportunity to discuss and practice these skills. It is designed to be interactive with immediate applicability.

Learning Objectives:

  • During our presentation, attendees will be introduced to scenarios LGBTQIA+ students commonly encounter when traveling abroad.
  • Attendees will additionally generate a list of common questions and concerns of LGBTQIA+ students during study abroad programs to utilize in developing institutional trainings.
  • After our presentation, attendees will be better equipped to help program leaders address some of the unique circumstances LGBTQIA+ students will encounter in study abroad programs.
