Engaging Student-Athletes in COIL: Studying Abroad from the Home Institution

Presentation Description:

Student-athletes are often left out of high impact practices including traditional study abroad as barriers in scheduling due to time commitments and the pressures to maximize their availability for off season training (Ishaq & Bass, 2019). COIL/VE provides opportunities for student-athletes to participate in international high impact practices from their home institutions. This poster will focus on why international education is important for student-athletes, how COIL can be used to encourage DEIB and make international learning more accessible to student-athletes.

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss ways to make international learning more accessible to student-athletes through the IDEAS Grant program.
  • Identify essential partnerships and resources at higher education institutions to encourage diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging opportunities for student-athletes in high impact practices such as study abroad.
  • Learn about engaging student-athletes through Collaborative Online International Learning/Virtual Exchange initiatives with case study examples at several U.S. institutions.
